I am writing this review of textbooks of forensic medicine as a part of my series of comparative reviews of textbooks of various subjects in all years of MBBS. As there are many textbooks available in the market it is difficult for students to chose one over other. I am writing all possible books of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology in this article and have mentioned books as recommended as per my review.

The Essentials of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology by K. S. Narayan Reddy, O. P. Murty

Counted as the best book for Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (FMT). I had read a part of this book in my UG days but I found it way too detailed. For the marks weightage which FMT has in UG medical exams and PG medical entrance exams, it is impractical according to me to read such detailed book. Students can refer to this book but I would not recommend it as a primary source of reading.

There are few concise and smaller version of this book in the market which I have mentioned below.

The Synopsis of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology by K. S. Narayan Reddy

CONCISE FORENSIC MEDICINE & TOXICOLOGY by K. S. Narayan Reddy

Singhal’s Forensic Medicine & Jurisprudence by S K Singhal (Recommended)

This is the book which I and my batchmates used to read in our UG days. It is an excellent book which gives all the details of Forensic medicine in a concise manner and which is easy to read and recollect in the exams. I would recommend this book to all UG students. There is a separate book for Toxicology by the same author.

Textbook of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology (Paras Medical Publisher) by V. V. Pillay (Recommended)

This book was given to me by Paras Medical Publishers for review purpose. I have not read this book in and out but from whatever I have read or in this book I can say this is an excellent book. A bit more detailed than Singhal’s book but less than Reddy’s. The book is coloured and has an excellent description of topics with photographic description. I think this is the way an FMT book should be. Forensic is an interesting subject to read and such kind of colourful illustrations helps to engage the students in the book which is great for learning. I really liked the inclusion of topics like Delhi Gangrape case, movies, Laws about homosexual sex in India etc. There are so many topics which this book has covered which is up to date and great to read. I would recommend this book to students who wants to learn more about forensic as a subject and not just read it for passing the exams.
