The Health Minister, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad has put all speculations at rest by saying that there will not be any increase in MBBS duration from present 5 1/2 years to 7 1/2 years. He has also said that rule of 1 years compulsory rural service before PG medical admission will not come in effect even in next academic session i.e. 2015-16. The Minister has directed concerned officials of the Ministry of health to keep the Notification in abeyance.

This confirmation has brought a sigh of relief in hearts of students.

There were rumours about MBBS course duration being increased by 2 years from present 5 1/2 years to 7 1/2 years including 2 years of internship compared to present 1 year and also a compulsory rural service of 1 year. Students had complains that MBBS course duration is already very long compared to other fields which have either 3 or 4 years graduation course. So students were worried that a 7 1/22 years MBBS plus a 3 years of MD/MS courses along with 1-3 years of post PG government service will put total duration to at least 11 1/2 and even 13 1/2 in some states.

Students from medical institutes across India were on strike since yesterday and wanted written assurance from the officials. All their efforts were paid off after this decision by health minister.

Go to our forum for further discussion on this topic.
