Increasing deaths among Doctors due to Stress, overburden & neglecting own Health
Dr.Amol Pampatwar 2011 batch Government Medical College Aurangabad MS ObGy died due to massive AMI while travelling from Miraj to Kolhapur. He was a very soft-spoken person and married a year ago. Post mortem showed lad infarct with multiple plaques in coronaries, neglected chest pain for two days. May his soul rest in peace.
Recently we are hearing news about many young doctors facing morbidity/mortality due to life style diseases like MI etc. Here are views, though from very short experience:
Increasing deaths among Doctors due to Stress, overburden & neglecting own Health
Doctors are the one who neglect health and healthy lifestyle the most. Few things that I found helpful are:
- Practice is a continuous process… You are there in the hospital for patients and not vice a versa. So don’t get bothered much by fluctuations in practice.
- Patients need you more than, you need them… So set your limits. Stop OPD on time. Avoid patients who want to take your leisure time (few patients feel pride in visiting u on Sundays or off your OPD time).
- ‘Put your eggs in different baskets’ is a good saying, but don’t put them in too many baskets that you are worried about missing few. So don’t keep so many attachments to hospitals. Every new attachment demands time plus travel. Stressing us further.
- Most important, set your own targets… not the targets that Ur colleague/competitor has set. He may be earning much more… but he might be paying the cost in some other ways (family… hobbies… friends etc).
- When in doubt about health don’t be your own doctor.
- Give time to family and friends, in hour of trouble, they are the one who will be with you in hospital and not your bosses or professional colleagues.
- “Happiness lies in satisfaction”. If we are not satisfied, we will not be happy even if we earn highest in the world.
- Best time to be happy is now, the best moment to be happy is present moment. Learn to enjoy the whole journey, don’t wait to be happy till you reach the destination!
Increasing deaths among Doctors due to Stress, overburden & neglecting own Health
this is vary sad news, may his soul rest in peace, this is happening very common most of institute and medical colleges only resident doctors will work more than 18hrs per day and they have lots of targets on their head apart from clinical work this will make life so stressful though MCI has given working time for resident no institute is implementing that,if this goes like this we may loose many young doctors from our own community some thing need tobe done for young doctors so that they work peacefully.
Sad to hear this .ironically quality of life of a doc is bad no weekends night duties v less time for lunch no time for self care.Even at government hospitals working conditions are bad no proper food n water dirty wards many get tuberculosis and other communicable diseases .
